science behind laser hair removal

Introduction:

Here we talk about the science behind exactly what happens when laser removal treatment is done.

8 Reasons

Laser hair removal works on the principle of selective photothermolysis, which involves targeting specific structures within the skin using a specific wavelength of light to cause thermal damage while minimizing damage to surrounding tissue. Here's a breakdown of the science behind laser hair removal:

  1. Melanin Absorption: The primary target of laser hair removal is melanin, the pigment that gives color to hair and skin. The melanin in the hair follicle absorbs the light energy emitted by the laser.

  2. Conversion of Light Energy to Heat: Once absorbed, the light energy is converted into heat. This heat damages the hair follicle, inhibiting its ability to grow new hair.

  3. Selective Targeting: The laser is calibrated to target melanin specifically. This is why laser hair removal is most effective on individuals with darker hair and lighter skin, as the contrast between the hair and skin color allows for better targeting of the hair follicles while minimizing damage to the surrounding skin.

  4. Treatment Phases: Hair growth occurs in three phases: anagen (active growth), catagen (transition), and telogen (resting). Laser hair removal is most effective during the anagen phase when the hair follicle is actively growing and contains the most melanin. Since not all hair follicles are in the anagen phase at the same time, multiple sessions are required to target hair follicles in different phases of growth.

  5. Mechanical Destruction of Hair Follicles: Over repeated sessions, the heat generated by the laser damages the hair follicles, leading to a reduction in hair growth. With each treatment, fewer hair follicles are able to produce hair.

  6. Gradual Reduction in Hair Growth: While laser hair removal can provide significant reduction in hair growth over time, it's important to note that it's not always permanent. Some hair follicles may be resistant to treatment or may regenerate over time, which is why occasional maintenance sessions may be needed for long-term results.

Overall, laser hair removal relies on the precise targeting of melanin in the hair follicle to selectively damage the follicle and inhibit hair growth, providing a long-lasting reduction in unwanted hair.

As we see here laser hair removal is a pretty complex thing! the science behind is very fascinating.
